All day today the MSM and left blogs have been on the warpath about Hamas. The Golden Child feels he was slighted by the hated Bush and the enemy McCain, and the media acolytes will have none of it.
Jamie Rubin took point on their attack. In an article for the Washington Post titled "Hypocrisy on Hamas" and cutely subtitled "McCain Was for Talking Before He Was Against It," Rubin contended that Senator McCain has flip-flopped his position. News outlets and bloggers have been playing his edited clip from an old interview with similar degrees of delight.
As Soren Dayton noted earlier the story is a lot of hogwash, which the editors of the Washington Post let squeak right onto the page, either with no oversight, or worse, with oversight. Obviously Senator McCain's position remains now as it was then, no unconditional meetings with Hamas.
Well now the full video is available and Rubin's creative editing exposed. Watch the whole thing, you know, now that you can.
The editors have failed in their job. They've allowed this deliberate, lying hack job onto the page and demeaned the paper. Write to them now, and demand a retraction. Public, and with lots of mea culpa goodness.

Patrick Hynes invited Hiatt on his radio show tomorrow. The secretary hung up on him. Nice.
Considering the reach this lie had, the backlash ought to reach as far. The Post Ombudsman should explain how something so completely, transparently opposite from the truth made it through their process. Maybe you ought to suggest that to her:

While you're at it, you might point out they are still promoting the article all over the site.

But I think part of the relationship is going to be dictated by how Hamas acts, not how the United States acts."

I'm really glad Reagan didn't act like a fracking diplomat! That is just stupid. See, I can prove it...look at this link!
“Ronald Reagan recognized the change in the direction of the Soviet leadership with Gorbachev, and shifted to diplomacy, with a view to encourage the Soviet Leader to pursue substantial arms agreements. Gorbachev agreed to meet Reagan in four summit conferences around the world: the first in Geneva, Switzerland, the second in Reykjavík, Iceland, the third held in Washington, D.C., along with the fourth summit in Moscow, Russia. Reagan believed that if he could persuade the Soviets to allow for more democracy and free speech, this would lead to reform and the end of Communism.”

Show me links and facts that disprove that Reagan conducted diplomacy. Otherwise your argument is invalid and false.

The expensive new round of American spending on strategic forces was accompanied by a willingness to challenge Soviet friends, allies, and clients on the ground in Africa, Central America, and Afghanistan. Gates has little to say about the cruelty of these proxy wars; what interests him is the fact that American support for the Contras and the Mujahedeen increased the financial and political pressure on the Soviet Union, already hard-pressed to meet the ballooning defense budgets of Presidents Carter and Reagan. Strategic forces are not nearly as expensive as conventional armies, but they cost plenty, and by the time Gorbachev assumed control in Moscow in the mid-1980s the Soviet budget-makers knew the well was dry. Reagan and some of his aides-especially Paul Nitze, Richard Perle, and Richard Pipes-sometimes hinted (it was not a popular policy) in the early 1980s that they were deliberately challenging the Soviets to spend themselves into bankruptcy
No diplomacy in that statement now is there...REALITY...diplomacy started when the enemy was weakened...that is how you win....nothing your little leftist view of the world would comprehend!

Were they have economic problems? Definitely. Did Reagan spend us into economic problems? Absolutely.
Did we both conduct diplomacy when it suited both parties? Yes.
Remember, we could have still nuked each other. You really don't get it...do you.
Besides, Bush has so broken the military you can't play the military card anymore. But we are now getting into opnion and not facts... but what can I expect from you.
absolutely nothing to anyone on the RIGHT side of the aisle...and you show your stupidity when you talk about the President "breaking" the military...and I will tell you what you can expect from me....EXACTLY the same as you have been getting...nothing will be different the next time you respond to me and I will respond in kind.

Suffice to say Reagan was willing to negotiate with the defeated. After that what more is there to say to the vacuous dolt ?
Sure Reagan talked to the soviets after he broke them.

Are you seriously contending that there is no difference between the USSR and Hamas? Because if you are, this is one of the most ignorant posts I've ever seen in a medium that attracts ignoramuses like flies to poop. Ironically, if you don't believe that USSR=Hamas the same description applies.

...means you win?
Hurray!
So if the Nazi's had won WWII, by your logic that would have been just fine?
(Naturally someone's going to bring up "Godwin's Law," here, but face it: that is the logical conclusion of your argument, is it not?)
And if the Soviet Union had had more nukes than we did, then THEY would have won. Yay! Yay for winning!!
Sadly -- as insane as that "Mutually Assured Destruction" policy was anyway -- the fact is that today we are not engaged in the same kind of rivalry. The enemy we are fighting does not use conventional military warfare (obviously), so the question is: what is your strategy to deal with asymmetrical warfare (by its very definition, designed to oppose a much larger, more powerful and wealthy military power because it is the only method of doing so)?
Maybe step one might be: Figuring out why they are attacking us? (Unfortunately, this might involve listening to their greivances and stated reasons for their actions...)
And step two might be: Figuring out how we can make them stop attacking us? And/or reduce the amount of support they have?
Hmmm...
Maybe bombing countries ISN'T the best way to solve every problem...
It's possible.......

You know something? I don't really give a tinker's dam why that seems to bother other people. So feel free to worry about that on your own time, somewhere else.

Reagan caused the Soviet Union to bankrupt itself trying to keep up and no Reagan didn't spend us into some sort of economic problem much like the Soviets. Unlike the Soviets he grew the economy gangbusters to more than offset his build up.
None of this diplomacy and all of it something Obama would never have the stones to do. Only after the Soviets were defeated and staring down the losing barrel of a gun did we talk.

Pres. Reagan was all about Peace Through Strength. Any time the enemy was willing to make concessions, he was willing to accept them. He stood firm on what he believed in, though: "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"
Is that what you're calling 'diplomacy'?
Heck, look at your buddy Nixon going to China.

The WaPo, years ago, chose to market itself to an audience who likes to hear negative things about Republicans and conservatives, especially said in a snotty tone.(How else can you explain the prominence of Dan Froomkin?)
This chosen audience doesn't especially care if the reporting is accurate. If they like what they hear, that's what counts. And they'll pay the WaPo to provide them what they want.
The WaPo is servicing its chosen customer. And that customer isn't us.

Derannimer wrote an in-depth analysis on McCain's stance on Hamasmas: McCain, Obama, and Hamas
A column is an opinion piece; to suggest that the Washington Post somehow engineered a left-slanting news article onto its front page is *quite* dishonest. Columnists are opinion writers whose work represents a point of view, not objective research, and they write for themselves -- they aren't assigned what to write by editors, since most of them are contract employees whose work is syndicated.
If you're going to demand that a columnist be subjected to the same fact-checking rigors as a news reporter, why not start with Ann Coulter, who never lets the truth get in the way of a good bash on the left?
And, as was pointed out above, the video is ambiguous at best -- not a smoking gun, as RedState would like us to believe.
And you people call talk radio a noisemaker.

Here's a synopsis for assistance:
Rubin: McCain is a hypocrite. He said we would meet with Hamas unconditionally.
Video: McCain not saying that, but instead saying "I think the United States should take a step back, see what they do when they form their government, see what their policies are, and see the ways that we can engage with them, and if there aren’t any, there may be a hiatus. But I think part of the relationship is going to be dictated by how Hamas acts, not how the United States acts."
And adding later:
You see it works sort of like it does for Michelle Obama. You know, she says something terrible, she's challenged on it many times, and then eventually she says it means the opposite, and everyone sagely agrees she "clarified".
Except in the case of McCain, it's something he didn't say, he wasn't challenged on it having not said it, and the clarification was by virtue of the original full context and remarks.
Class dismissed.

"A man does what he can and endures what he must."
O.K. I watched the video... Didn't really see your point. So, I read the Washington Post article you're referring to... Got your point even less.
The word "unconditional" is not mentioned once in the column.
(By the way, the author of the column, Jamie Rubin, is the person who interviewed McCain in the video.)
The quote is only "out of context" in the sense that the author does not re-print verbatim the entire transcript of the interview. What he quotes is this:
Here is the crucial part of our exchange:
I asked: "Do you think that American diplomats should be operating the way they have in the past, working with the Palestinian government if Hamas is now in charge?"
McCain answered: "They're the government; sooner or later we are going to have to deal with them, one way or another, and I understand why this administration and previous administrations had such antipathy towards Hamas because of their dedication to violence and the things that they not only espouse but practice, so . . . but it's a new reality in the Middle East. I think the lesson is people want security and a decent life and decent future, that they want democracy. Fatah was not giving them that."
For some Europeans in Davos, Switzerland, where the interview took place, that's a perfectly reasonable answer. But it is an unusual if not unique response for an American politician from either party. And it is most certainly not how the newly conservative presumptive Republican nominee would reply today.
Given that exchange, the new John McCain might say that Hamas should be rooting for the old John McCain to win the presidential election. The old John McCain, it appears, was ready to do business with a Hamas-led government, while both Clinton and Obama have said that Hamas must change its policies toward Israel and terrorism before it can have diplomatic relations with the United States.
Essentially, McCain is saying "I understand the antipathy others have shown towards Hamas, BUT they are the democratically elected government, and we're going to have to negotiate with them sooner or later." McCain's position, at this time, was identical to Obama's position.
And you have to acknowledge, at least, that McCain was honest enough to admit that Hamas is the legitimately and democratically elected government, and to offer some reasonable explanation for this. I commend him for his position here -- which I think you are mis-representing, FAR more so than Rubin is mis-representing McCain's position.
To call Rubin a liar is absurd.
Beyond that, why isn't the question asked: "Would you meet unconditionally with Israel?"
I would like an answer to this.
We could add: "Would you meet unconditionally with Pakistan? Egypt? Saudi Arabia? Jordan? Uzbekistan? Turkey? India? Colombia? Russia? ........" None of these countries, last I checked, are as democratic as Palestine is -- and yet they are our allies. (And none of them is as democratic as Venezuela, or Bolivia, or Brazil, or ........ many other countries with whom our leaders adamantly REFUSE to meet with. Why is that?)
"Essentially, McCain is saying ..." in your post. Why settle for essentially, when we have what he actually said?

I hope to God that he challenges Obama on every international issue because as proven in the last few days, Obama has no idea what he speaks of regarding international affairs. Obviously like some here, I am a Fredhead and will never vote for a Dem as long as I live, but I want to see McCain get on the offensive and publicize how ignorant Obama really is regarding international affairs.
I can't but help enjoy the rich irony beginning to unfold. By the time October rolls around McCain will be awash in pro Obama media coverage full of lies and distortions for their guy. And McCain will be able to do little to combat it because of his own campaign finance reform which was largely predicated on the "even handed" media being the arbiter of information from Labor Day to Election Day.
He made private financing of speech at that level illegal and now he's going to have to live with it. He's being hoisted on his own petard, another irony seeing he's a Navy man and should know how that happens.

Slash a statement by someone, reconstruct it, and presto, you've got a lie. It would take an ape not to notice what has been done and in this case, the difference between McCain and Obama. But we've already been visited on this thread by a couple of apes so perhaps the cognitive skills of that species has still been overrated.

I really want what you're saying to be true... but where does McCain say there should be no unconditional meetings with Hamas? I can see how saying he favored meetings with Hamas is misleading. He said that we should wait and see how Hamas acts once it is in power, which is not taking a positions on the issue.
